First Stop, Michigan!

Kelly Smoak

As many of you know by now, we have begun our life on the road, traveling from job to job and exploring along the way. For the indefinite future, we will have no certain home.

First stop is Saint Louis, Michigan. This lovely lake is just one of many in our area, and there are wildflowers EVERYWHERE.

We went for burgers in the little downtown area the day after I arrived in town. It was a damn good burger, too. French onions with homemade french onion dip on top of a perfect patty. It was divine. And the the frozen custard. It makes me feel like a kid again. Maddie even got a pup cup with a milkbone on top.

The sun sets much later here than I am used to from back on Georgia. There is still some light in the sky at ten! Both of the photos below were taken at around ten at night. The first photo of the moon in the sky was taken during a night walk down to the little river that runs along our street. Garon was fishing and Maddie and I were just enjoying the night. There were lightning bugs all around us and you could see the moon reflected in the water. The second photo is taken from just inside our front room looking out at the sunset colors in the sky at around 9:30 at night.

Maddie has been needing some extra loving and reassurance whenever she can get it lately, and you know I've been giving it to her. Since we live with such a small yard now and she has to be on leash constantly, we decided to buy her a little toy. She's never really had one and we didn't think she would care uh for it, to be honest. After seeing her with my parent's dog's toy, Flappy, I saw how she reverted back to puppyhood. She would pounce on it and shake it and run around the house like it was Christmas morning. So, we got her Mr. Fox. I must say, she is quite smitten. She's settling in pretty well now after about two weeks of being here. She loves the walks we take at the park. More on that soon.

We're in the land of wind turbines, corn and soy fields and lots of wildlife. Deer everywhere, every time we go out in the afternoon. Rabbits, too. Maddie saw one the other night while I was walking her and she wanted it pretty bad. I don't know if she has even seen a rabbit before. I know I had NO IDEA how fast they could really move.

More form us soon. We have so much to share with you about our adventures we've already had since we've been here. Until then, I'll keep taking photos along the way.
