My "Somewhere in Time" Dream

Kelly Smoak

"Somewhere in Time" is my first classic movie love AND my first movie score love. John Barry really hit that one out of the park. When I found out we were moving to Michigan, I told Garon that the number one thing on my to do list while there was to go to Mackinac Island and to see the Grand Hotel where "Somewhere in Time" was filmed. And over Labor Day weekend, he took me there.

We approached the hotel from the West, our viewing being that of the photo in bottom right corner. As we got closer, I snapped the shot in the bottom left corner. On this short walk between photos we met a couple who was there vacationing for the week. Their names are Roger and Stella and they fell in love with Maddie. By the time we made it around to the front of the hotel where the photos on the top row were taken, they had become friends, AND offered to take Maddie for us so we could go inside the hotel.

Now, you all know how much I adore that dog. To let her go off in the hands of strangers says something for my adoration of this movie. Roger begged us to let him do us this favor. He said he does a good deed for a stranger once a day, and this would be his for the day. Stella reassured us (me) over and over of their experience handling stranger's dogs, as they work for Rover, a dog walking/sitting app. So, after exchanging numbers, we parted, them walking away with Maddie. And do you know that Maddie didn't look back at me. Not one time. I was part relieved and part sad. Haha.

Any who, the inside was very beautiful and I actually didn't take many photos because I was taking it all in (and I didn't want to leave Maddie for long, because I have massive separation anxiety even if she doesn't). Here is what I came away with to share.

And, of course, the veranda.

I just couldn't help myself, honestly.

There was another special place on the island where they filmed Somewhere in Time. Down by the water is a memorial rock placed in the spot. If you know, you know. "Is it you?

Before I go, yes, I saw her.She wasn't where I thought she would be, and I found her by surprise, which is actually perfect.

A huge thank you to my husband for indulging me in this fantasy. It is you and I love you!!
